First of all (because I know how people tend to jump to conclusions on Tumblr) I don’t support the way JRoth and his team killed off Lexa. Yes, it had to be done for the storyline but it could have been way more tasteful and more heroic. Would people be less angry then? Some might. Some would still be pissed because their favourite character (inluding mine) got killed.
Now on to the question of why I still support The 100. Simple answer? Because it’s a fucking fantastic show! The 100 is a show about a political war. People die. That’s how life is. What I love about The 100 is that it’s realistic. War doesn’t care about sexuality, the colour of your skin or who gets hurt. War is about hurt and sorrow, heartbreak and despair.
I am in no way saying (nor have I ever) said that I don’t support the LGBT or the POC community (quite the contrary as I am an equality speaker). If you don’t like how The 100 has turned out, fine, don’t watch it, but I’m not going to stop because characters gets killed off.
Now let me explain why it doesn’t affect my decision to still watch the show;
Equality means equal rights for everyone. When I watch the show, I don’t get pissed off because a character that represent a minority (gay, POC etc.) dies. I get pissed off because that character dies. I don’t care whether the character is gay, white, young, short, female, hispanic etc., but I do care about the personality of a character and how it’s being represented.
Let’s make a scenario; Kane is physically and mentally tortured and then killed, and Raven dies a heroic death in battle. Now turn this scenario around; Raven tortured and murdered, Kane dying a heroic death. White, male character going into battle and dying heroically and POC, female character dying a tragic death. Would you react the same way? Of course you wouldn’t! This is baffling me, because aren’t both scenarios equally disturbing?
There are some serious double standards out there, and this is the reason why we still don’t have equality. The more people in this community brings up the differences in the character’s sexuality and color of their skin, the less equality we’ll have.
How about focusing on the characters as characters and their personalities without constantly bringing up their sexuality or the color of their skin? I’m 1000% for representing different kinds of characters with different backgrounds, but we also have to stop constantly making it the biggest focus. Lexa was so much more than a representation for the LGBT community; She represented a strong female character, a fighter, a brilliant strategist and kind to those she loved. Lincoln represented loyalty, braveness and kindness. These traits are more interesting to me because these are the traits that creates their personality, not their sexuality or the color of their skin.
Lexa isn’t just gay representation, Lincoln isn’t just POC representation; They are more than that. I focus on the brilliant acting, writing, scenes and soundtrack, and most of all the fantastic characters and their personalities. That’s why I still watch The 100.
